CORNFLAKE ARTIFACT: This common brown artifact  is said to be caused by air bubbles formed when xylene dries before the slide is mounted. It can sometimes Be so extensive as to render  the slide unsuitable for evaluation. Remounting the slide can sometimes improve  the appearance of the smear.
