Cervical Cytology

Cervical cancer: Epidemiology, aetiology, pathogenesis and main histological types

IMMATURE SQUAMOUS METAPLASTIC CELLS : Note the presence of both  immature metaplastic cells and superficial squames in this smear .The immature metaplastic cells have been spontaneously exfoliated and appear rounded .  When immature metaplastic cells are forcibly detached by  a cervical spatula they occasionally have elongated cellular processes  reflecting disrupted  intercellular bridges . NOTE :mature metaplastic squamous epithelial cells  cannot be distinguished  from original (native)  squamous epithelial cells in a cervical smear.
