On completion of this section the cytotechnologist should know:

• To know the organs of the female genital tract and have a general knowledge of their relationship to each other and their structure and function
• To understand the hormones produced by the anterior pituitary gland and  the ovaries .
• To understand the effect of the hormones on the uterus and the cyclical changes in the endometrial lining
• To understand the place of hormonal cytology in clinical practice and tobe able to make a general assessment of hormonal status from a vaginal smear.
